Last night while watching some random thing on G4. Ok, it was Star Trek. I read at the bottom of the screen, the Feed; Universal music not to renew iTunes contract. So today I did a little Googling. Apple is denying reports that record label Universal Music Group does not plan to renew its contract to sell songs on iTunes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. What are they nuts? They don’t want their music available to millions of consumers who use the iPod the best selling media player of all time. Are they planning to open their own itunes like store?

Well they might have forgot the iPod only works with iTunes, which Apple has gotten flack over in the past. One of the reasons Apple only lets the iPod work with iTunes is so they can make sure the hardware works with the software. This is why PC’s have so many problems, too many hardware components for microsoft to make sure Windows will function 100%. Everyone knows that the generic brand is never really as good.

Sure you can buy songs from any where add them to iTunes and then sync them over to your iPod. Who really does this? We live in a convenient disposable world where if you can’t set it and forget it, then you just forget it. If somebody buys and iPod then they probably will use iTunes. Mainly because you need iTunes to create playlists as the iPod does not create them on fly. : (

If its true, I think Universal is making a big mistake. Apple just sold a million iTunes capable iPhones. Record companies just need to forget the vinyl/cd past and move on. If you don’t’ provide the consumer with the product they are looking for then they will just buy something else. So say an artist on Universal is not on iTunes when a consumer goes there then they will just purchase something else they like from another artist. People do not buy based on record label. They buy the artists’ music that they like. They do not care whether is Sony, Virgin, or Warner. They just want to hear and purchase the one song they want at that moment.
